Coaches Corner - March 1, 2008

Welcome!
Paddles up? Huki!....Lets all pull together and make this program run smooth like the wa'a. Canoe's are clean and ready to go! Kikaha O Ke Kai canoe club continues to maintain and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture through the promotion of competitive and recreational outrigger canoe paddling for youth, family, and the community. First things first get as much paperwork done as possibly,(membership forms & insurance ect.). Before we get on the water i like to welcome paddlers and introduce our coaches and go over protocols; club rules & expectations, canoe safety, teamwork and canoe parts. I'm putting together another coaching handout but not handing it out all at once. Our first couple months of practice be focusing on technique and working on building our endurance training zones 1-3. Building a solid base is key for up coming workouts. Coaches will help go over some bases. Also posted below are some paddling terms in Hawaiian.

Kikaha Presidents Message

Welcome to Kikaha O Ke Kai Outrigger Canoe Club!

Established in 1996 and paddling out of Federal Way, Washington. Kikaha
is a Non-Profit organization dedicated to the sport of Hawaii Outrigger
canoe paddling. We welcome new members wanting to discover this exciting
sport. We seek those in love with being outdoors, active and want to be
a part of this special sport.

If you would like to give paddling a try, join us at our first
recreational practice on Sunday March 9th 2007 at 9am at Steel Lake in
Federal Way, WA. We will later release times for our Keikis (children)
first practice set to begin in late April or early May.

For practices, Bring a water bottle, wear active gear to keep you warm,
and bring change of clothes. We will require a signed copy of the ACA
Adult Waiver and Release of Liabillity form found on this website.

Our season runs generally from April through early September and we
feature short and long distance races for both novice and experience
paddlers. We have a full Coaching Staff experienced in overseeing each
of our racing programs: Keikis, Juniors, Women and Men. And those new to
the sport, will learn paddling technique, race rules, and the sport's
long heritage.
