Kikaha
is a Non-Profit organization dedicated to the sport of Hawaii Outrigger
canoe paddling. We welcome new members wanting to discover this exciting
sport. We seek those in love with being outdoors, active and want to be
a part of this special sport.

If you would like to give paddling a try, join us at our first
recreational practice on Sunday March 9th 2008 at 9am at Steel Lake in
Federal Way, WA. We will later release times for our Keikis (children)
first practice set to begin in late April or early May.

For practices, Bring a water bottle, wear active gear to keep you warm,
and bring change of clothes. We will require a signed copy of the ACA
Adult Waiver and Release of Liabillity form found on this website.

Our season runs generally from April through early September and we
feature short and long distance races for both novice and experience
paddlers. We have a full Coaching Staff experienced in overseeing each
of our racing programs: Keikis, Juniors, Women and Men. And those new to
the sport, will learn paddling technique, race rules, and the sport's
long heritage.

For further information, don't hesitate to contact myself or

Gordon Martinez - Head Coach, bruddah_g@hotmail.com
Boy Chun Fook - PNWORCA Association President and Kikaha Club member, BOYCF@aol.com

Thanks for stopping by our website.

Happy New Year!

John Richardson - President

j.richardson@comcast.net
206.812.5221 wkScottyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17244054544877323586noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-111057446172521393.post-48724459669189513682008-04-10T13:51:00.001-07:002008-04-10T13:51:46.504-07:00Race # 7, Seattle, SSP, April 12thRace # 7, Seattle, SSP, April 12th

The Final Winter Series Race will take place on April 12th at Sail Sand Point Outrigger's home site.

Race course is 7 miles on Lake Washington - out to the point and back.

Schedule
8:30 Registration Opens
9:30 Paddlers meeting
10:00 Race Starts

Registration Fee $10

Directions:

Sail Sand Point is located about five miles north of the University of Washington on the western shore of Lake Washington.

The entrance to SSP is off of Sand Point Way NE at 74th Street.

Traveling N on I5
Just past the City and just before the UW, Take Hwy 520 East. Unfortunately we had an unusual cold snap hit the NW region that plummeted temperatures into the 30's at race time with the wind chill making it feel even colder!
With the low temperatures, the current flowing fast and the wind really picking up just after the start of the race we all knew we'd be in for a tough day! However, I'm happy to say that everyone made it through the race ok without too much difficulty, although I believe there was one huli.
My sincere apologies for the minor bumbling of the final race results, but as you could tell this was our first time organizing a race and we experienced a few teething problems.
Congratulations to all participants and thank you again for your support. Words are used in this specialty like no other. For example, Navy terms. This also works for paddling the Hawaiian canoe.
If Na Ho`okele (steerers) use the same language for commands universally, there will be little or no confusion on the part of the paddlers. These commands can and should be used to familiarize the crew with the language. The same language used consistently also gives Ho`okele (steerer) control of the canoe and used to the idea of giving commands.
UNE = pronounced OO-NAY. To “lever.”
This is the action MUA (stroker and sometimes others) takes to help HO`OKELE (steerer) turn the bow of the canoe going around the turn flag. This can be ANY movement of the paddle, from a J-stroke to paddling toward the hull. I have heard this term mis-pronounced UNI = OO-NEE. This word is not in the Hawaiian dictionary.
KAHI = pronounced, KAH-HEE. To “cut.”
Holds the paddle still, blade “cutting” in the same line as the canoe. No “action” taken.
PAHI = pronounced PAH-HEE. Edge, the blade or knife edge.
These are commands that can be used by Ho`okele in the canoe.
`E `E! = pronounced ay ay (this is hard to describe..... actually a very short “`e”). Get in the canoe!
HO`OMAKAUKAU! = pronounced Hoh oh MAH cow cow. Get ready or get set!
This can be whatever you think “get set” means. Paddle across the gunwales, or poised to plant the blade in the water or whatever.
KAU! = pronounced kah oo. Place (or plant) the blade!
If it's training:
HOE = pronounced ho aee. Paddle! And off you go.
If it's racing:
HUKI!!!!!!!!!! = pronounced hoo key. Pull, GET INTO IT!

All of the following terms are from either Hawaiian Dictionary by Pukui & Elbert or The Hawaiian Canoe by Tommy HolmesScottyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17244054544877323586noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-111057446172521393.post-20466044727622244722007-12-27T19:55:00.003-08:002008-01-03T17:13:33.141-08:00Kikaha.com's New Web Site and Newsletter<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_V0ePtyIBn-4/R3bMSa5WsqI/AAAAAAAAAh4/wAYM3mIfsjU/s400/kikaha2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5149527840774337186" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_V0ePtyIBn-4/R3R0Ga5WpfI/AAAAAAAAAEE/j4DT5wuIr9U/s400/emblemKikaha.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5148867927639238130" />
Please let us know how the site looks.

Here is a pointer to the Dec 07 newsletter.Scottyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17244054544877323586noreply@blogger.com
